Product Description

You can learn a lot about a guy when you shoot him into space. A guy like Starbase Jeff. Back home, Jeff Tuttle was a humble shareware programmer, content to while away the hours writing code and drawing cute little goblins.

But put him in charge of a deep space construction firm, and look out. Jeff took to his new job like a lungfish to mud, and pretty soon he was raking in the cash, making shady back-door deals, and swearing like the crew of the Bounty. All in the name of Money, Money, Money.

What drives a decent human being to such desperate acts of greed? What transforms him from a sweet-natured pussycat into the backstabbing, twitching, squinting, bewhiskered old coot we knew as Starbase Jeff? The world may never know.

Game Synopsis: Starbase Jeff another clever little strategy game. This one is set in outer space, where contractors (the players) are competing for building contracts on a growing space station. It's a gambling-format puzzle game, in which you can make money by building living quarters, finishing the space station, or forcing other players to build next to you.

Gambling + Pipes = Starbase Jeff
December 05, 2002

Not amazing, but still a great game that left me wanting to play more. A lot more. Starbase Jeff combines some elements from pipe games with gambling- you pay chips into the pot to play pipe cards, and you get chips from the pot when you play end cap cards. If your new card is not next to any of your color of cards, you pay chips to the people who have cards between your new card and your nearest previously-played card. The person who completes (closes off) the space station gets the pot. Several rounds are played and the person with the most chips at the end wins. Completing the station can sometimes be a little random, but I've found good strategy makes up for it in that you can force other players to pay you if you place your tiles right. I've won more games by this than by winning the pot. The simultaneous aspect is also a great way to add in more strategy- the different types of cards have different ratings. Everyone chooses a card to put down, and reveals them at the same time. The highest rated cards go first. All in all, an excellent buy, especially for the price.

Versatile game with lots of variance...
October 29, 2001

This is a simple, cute game where players lay out tiles to expand a space station, paying money into the pot. Players charge each other for using each other's station modules, and the person who finishes the station by playing a 'cap' or dead-end takes the pot. It's basically a pipe-laying game with a good amount of luck.

The best aspect of the game is how much the game changes between 2, 3, and 4 players. It is amusing, and cheap. I especially like the rules: 'We recommend you do not play this game for money. Furthermore, we strongly suggest you don't play for a nickel a credit.'

Worth the money.

Pipe game in space
May 15, 2002

The rules were a lot of fun to read, but everytime I've played it it seemed that each 'starbase' would finish very quickly with very little change in credits between the players.

I found it a bit interesting. No one else liked it at all.

I'd hoped that the advanced rules would help. They did, but not as much as I'd have liked.
